Van Morrison Gives His All

For about 1 hour and 45 minutes Wednesday night, Van Morrison, 77, performed non-stop at the Arizona Financial Theatre in Phoenix. The Belfast icon was the star of a 10-member musical performance group. He's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and showed why. While there was no conversation with the audience, he stood center stage and sang, and played the harmonica, and played the saxophone and literally took no more than about 14 seconds between songs. Soul music, rhythm and blues, or rock -- whatever label you want -- Morrison stood and delivered, backed by his band (which featured at least four other grey-haired performers, which was great.) Three guitarists, keyboard player, drummer, two guys playing saxophone or trumpet or clarinet, and two female backup singers, who were also percussionists. All top notch. And Morrison, in a respectable, blue-tinged suit and hat, and wearing sunglasses, provided a strong voice and presence that have been on the international scene since the mid-1960s. He barely moved an inch, but when he raised his left hand, the song was coming to a close. He finished with Brown-Eyed Girl and then a marvelous extended-version of Gloria (from his days fronting Them.) And the crowd stood, and sang along, and gave the man his due.

Don't go see your musical heroes

After being a lifelong fan, Van Morrison was a huge disappointment. Hat pulled down, sunglasses, zero (and I mean ZERO) audience interaction. Yes, he's a great musician, and displayed that... but it looked like he couldn't wait to get done and get out of there. His band was extremely talented, and that made it somewhat worthwhile. I don't care if you've played Moondance a million times in concert; I'VE NEVER SEEN YOU PLAY IT! Having your (very talented) vibes player play a few bars of it as an afterthought doesn't cut it. I've been going to concerts for almost 50 years, most disappointing concert of my life. Save your money, just stay home and listen to his records.
